Mitä opin tänään / What I learned today

Today I learned that you can bite your own finger through your ear.

Koejärjestely: työnnä etusormet korviin, kynsi taaksepäin. Lonksuta leukojasi. Huomaat, että rouskutat samalla sormiasi.

Yleistasolla anatominen selitys on yksinkertainen (ks kuvat).

Experimental setup: push your index fingers into your ears, nails to the back. Chomp your jaws. You will feel your fingers being chewed on.

At the general level, there is a simple explanation (see Figures). The temporomandibular joint (Wikipedia) is surrounded by a complex machinery of muscles and sinews, extending all the way back to the ear. When the jaw moves, these muscles are activated. The finger feels either the force of the joint directly, or the motion of these other muscles — the details are complex.

Life may be boring, but it is interesting!
